Difference between generator and alternator?

Generator and alternator?? Both are used to produce electricity. Then what's the difference? Ok...let we move on to analyse it.

  • Yes. Generator and alternator are used to produce electricity by means of mechanical energy.
  • In construction wise, both are different. But they both are intended to produce electricity.

Generator:
  • Generally, DC generator is simply called as generator.
  • In generator, the stator consists of field winding and rotor consists of armature winding.
  • Here, the main magnetic field is produced by stator field winding.

Alternator:
  • Synchronous generator is likely called as alternator
  • In alternator, the stator consists of Three phase armature winding and rotor consists of field winding.
  • Here, the main magnetic field is produced by rotor field winding.
